As long as I can remember,
I have only wanted to be a nurse. Nothing else ever held the slightest
interest. As a child, I bandaged up everything that would lie still
long enough. But in 1970, I put my nursing license on inactive to
raise my two adorable sons.
In the midst of all the diapers
and nap times, the idea of fixing up and owning a rental house as
an investment sounded like a good idea. Indeed, it became so much
fun that, in 1974, I entered the real estate industry. A few years,
later I became a successful sales broker and joined ReMax. It was
a great experience and an excellent profession that I enjoyed for
over 15 years.
My daily prayer has always been for God to put me
where He wants me and that I will always be willing to do what He
ask. This is a dangerous prayer if a person is not serious, because
God’s plans may not always align with ours.
In 1990, I began to get the unshakable feeling that
I needed to get back into health care. I presented every argument
possible with God, but the conviction would not leave. I went back
to college for reentry into nursing and then signed on part time
with an agency that staffed nurses into various hospitals.
I couldn’t understand what God had in mind.
What was the plan here? One night while working a night shift, at
the awful hour of 3:00 AM, another nurse gave me a tip that started
this company. God opens doors, we simply have to step through.
Within two weeks of her suggestion, in 1991, I had
a fully incorporated business by the name of ExcelCare. We began
as a psychiatric nurse-staffing agency. I did all the shifts myself,
negotiated the contracts, and ran payroll on a calculator as I lined
up the timecards across the sofa. The invoices were prepared on
a typewriter because I didn't know how to operate a computer.
In a few months, other nurses and mental health technicians
joined ExcelCare and we began to grow. We were in every room of
my home. File cabinets were in the boy's bedrooms (they were off
to college), billing was on the balcony, staffing and administration
in the living room, payroll in the basement, orientation at the
dining table, and video training in the living room. We had invaded
the whole house!
In 1995, I purchased our current office building in
Overland Park, Kansas and we moved to an “official office”.
As soon as we moved in, we opened a private home care company. Today,
we do very limited psychiatric nurse staffing to hospitals. We are
now 98% home care.
In 2001, we expanded to the St. Joseph, Missouri area.
I purchased a smaller office building and opened a Missouri branch
office. It is growing rapidly and we are servicing, with excellence,
the surrounding 9 counties in the St. Joseph area. In 2005 we opened
our newest office in
Leavenworth, Ks. We love working and officing in this community
and the new branch office is growing rapidly. We are grateful for
the community
support.
We are one of the largest independently owned, private
home care companies in the Kansas City area. We supply over 450
caregivers into hundreds of resident's home in Kansas and Missouri.
God has blessed us so much. We give Him the honor and glory.
We believe in allowing and assisting people to stay
independent in their own home as long as it is safely possible.
Home is where we are the happiest, healthiest, and live the longest.
Anyone who has been away from home for a few days can remember how
nice it is to get back to your very own bed no matter how humble
it is.
